LEARN THE FAITH
Starting in the summer of 2008, eCatholicHub began creating the most complete database of Catholic saints anywhere online. Now here it is at your fingertips. This database is based on the Roman Martyrology, the Vatican's official list of saints and blesseds. You can search for saints, read their stories and find tons of information. If you have any questions about the database, take a look at our FAQ page. And if you need help navigating the database or understanding terms or abbreviations, look at our Help page. We trust that you will find this database of saints to be helpful for years to come.
A Note on the Spelling of Names
eCatholicHub's Mark Giszczak translated Saint names, titles and some other information directly from the Latin of the 2004 Roman Martyrology. In order to make it easy to search for saints who share the same name, but not the same language of origin, Mark translated saint names uniformly into English. So "Andreas" in Latin becomes "Andrew" in English (but "Andre" in French, "Andrea" in Spanish and Italian and "Andreas" in German) and "Teresia" becomes "Teresa" (but also "Theresa" in English, "Therese" in French, and so on). So, if you want to find a saint's name in its langauge of origin, look at the table of names in different languages and track the name across six languages: Latin, English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. If you can't find a saint by searching for his or her name as it is usually spelled, check the table of names to see if it might be spelled differently in English than in its language of origin.
Recent Beatifications and Canonizations
Every year, new saints and blesseds are added to the official roles by the Vatican. As soon as the beatification or canonization event takes place, the person's name is technically part of the Roman Martyrology. However, the book form of the Roman Martyrology is only published once every few decades and the most recent version was printed in 2004. So we have added saints and blesseds to the database who have been beatified or canonized more recently than 2004. While we do our best to keep up with the pace of additions, some new saints may have been skipped over because we did not have enough information. If you find an ommission, please let us know.
Butler's Lives of the Saints
Butler's Lives of the Saints is a classic work which chronicles the lives of hundreds of saints. Alban Butler, an English priest, wrote the original twelve volume work in the 18th century but it has been continuously updated and reprinted in many versions. Fortunately, Google has scanned in the 1866 edition published in Dublin by James Duffy. So we've presented it on our site using Google Book's preview tool to show the ten volumes Google scanned (they missed two). Saints are organized by their feast days in the pre-Vatican II calendar. For a few this make them difficult to find, but you can search each volume if you'd like. Take a look at the table of contents of each volume and click on the name of the saint you want to read about. Some entries are only a couple sentences because we know precious little about the person, but a few of the entries for famous saints span more than 20 pages. We think you'll find this resource extremely valuable.
Frequently Asked Questions and Help

In these places, we address the most common questions about our Catholic Saints Database and about Catholic saints in general. The Help page explains abbreviations, errors and the data structure of the database. Hopefully the information provided here will help you make the best use of our database.
Saint Resources
On our Saints Resources page, you'll find helpful external links to saint information, other saint websites and even books about saints.
